Dr Mahmud Ahsan BSc (Civil), MSc (Hydraulics), PhD (Computational hydrodynamics), MIAHR
Director
Dr Mahmud Ahsan is the founding Director of Hydrotec & Engineering Consultants Limited. Mahmud graduated in Civil engineering (1997) from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and then completed a Master's degree (2001) at Hohai University specialising in computational hydraulics funded by government scholarships. His pioneering development of a new advection-diffusion model in his Master's research is well recognised in the national and international scientific communities. Mahmud later pursued his PhD research at the University of Manchester where he was awarded a well-respected scholarship by the University of Manchester. He focused his PhD research (2007) on computational hydrodynamics especially turbulence modelling in free surface flow and porous bed. He applied his developments in the closed channel flow, open channel flow both over permeable and impermeable beds and the oscillatory flow. His findings in turbulence models show that some of the conventional models in the present day do not properly represent the real hydraulic properties. Therefore, without sufficient knowledge of hydraulics and turbulence statistics - project engineers and modellers might skip very important aspects which could eventually produce catastrophic consequences.
Dr Ahsan has extensive industrial experience in flood risk assessment (FRA), river and coastal modelling, drainage strategy, flood mitigation, flood alleviation, project appraisal study, surface water management plans, flood mapping outlines, flood forecasting, wave overtopping, hydrology, water quality modelling, morpho-dynamics, wastewater drainage in urban networks and civil engineering design. He also assists with the statutory review of other consultants' FRA and drainage strategy studies. He published and presented his research developments in peer-reviewed national and international conferences including in the UK, USA, France, China and Malaysia.
Dr Ahsan is a member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR, 2007) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE, 2005), UK.
